Lessons from the Little Rock Nine

In third grade Social Studies, we have been learning about the different levels of government in the United States. We read the story about the "Little Rock Nine," a brave group of African-Americans who helped to end segregation in schools. We discovered that all three levels of government were involved in the situation in Little Rock. On their tablets, the students were able to watch this short video about the "Little Rock Nine," and then share what they learned from these courageous students.

Here is the video we watched in class (which would also be a great review for the test next week!), and the students' responses follow. We have some very wise third graders!

Fabulous Fables

This week, the third graders learned how to identify plot and theme in literature. We read the story Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allsburg in our reading textbook, in which the two ants learn an important lesson. Then the students read a selection of Aesop's fables and created "glogs," or online posters, to share the plot and theme of the fable they read. The students had complete control of the color scheme, images, and text that they used on their glog. We have quite a creative group of third graders!

To view each glog in full-screen mode, click on the button in the top-right corner of each glog. Also, these glogs are rather large in size so they may take a moment to load. These were created using the website edu.glogster.com.

Need ideas for a comment?
  • Share what you liked about the students' color or image choices
  • Share the names of other fables with similar morals
  • Share a time when one of these morals applied in your life or when you learned that lesson the hard way
  • Ask what the student(s) liked about using a glog to show information

This week, our school earned the Silver Award for being a Healthy Howard school! To earn this award, our school has been working all year to become more active and healthy. Some of the activities include “Walking Wednesdays,” Fall Festival, Field Day, Sock Hop, and the third graders’ favorite . . . “Dance Party Fridays”! In honor receiving this award, the students did research on different healthy lifestyle tips. They were excited to use their new tablets in the classroom to do their research and type their paragraphs! Please feel free to share one of your favorite healthy living tips as well!
